The scientific study of stained glass and protective glazing has been part of the identity of the Glasmalerei Dr. H. Oidtmann for many decades.
In collaboration with researchers, heritage conservators and scientific institutions, our workshop develops concepts for sustainable restoration and the long-term protection of historic stained glass. The aim is to unite conservation, technical and economic requirements.
Within various research projects, new documentation systems for restorations were developed, as well as studies on adhesives and binding materials for historic glazing.
In addition, our company took part, together with the cathedral workshops in Cologne and Erfurt and other research institutions, in a multi-year research programme of the German Federal Ministry for Research and Technology. The aim of the project was to develop general standards for protective glazing systems for historic stained glass.
The combination of glass art and modern technology also shapes our work to this day. Together with Jürgen Claus, projects were created in which artistic leaded glazing was combined with solar elements.
