Restoration and conservation

The restoration of historic stained glass has been one of the central tasks of the Glasmalerei Dr. H. Oidtmann for decades. Preserving original substance and treating historic glazing with respect are at the heart of our work.

Following the conservation principle as much as necessary, as little as possible, glass paintings from the Middle Ages to the modern era are conserved, restored and studied scientifically.

In close collaboration with heritage authorities, researchers and conservators, individual concepts are developed for the long-term protection of valuable stained glass. Our work is based on current scientific findings, many years of experience and precise craftsmanship.

Notable restoration projects of recent years include:

  • Soest, St Patrokli Cathedral, Tree of Jesse window (1160/66)
  • Oppenheim, St Catherine’s Church, glazing from the 14th to 20th century
  • Emden, East Frisian Regional Museum, town hall window of 1576
  • Hagen, Central Station, window by Jan Thorn Prikker (1911)
  • Vienna, Church am Steinhof, Art Nouveau glazing by Koloman Moser (1906)
  • Brandenburg, Cathedral, choir windows from the 13th to 20th century
  • Marburg, St Elisabeth, choir glazing 13th to 14th century
